Three simple ways to make a PVC door even more secure

PVC doors are a good choice for security because they are so strong and hard-wearing. Nevertheless, there are always upgrades you can make to improve the safety of your home and your family. Here are some things you can do to your PVC door to improve its security.

Anti-snap lock

Burglars often use a technique called lock snapping to gain entry to a property. This involves literally snapping a lock in two to expose and manipulate the cylinder. Intruders will also often use a blowtorch to melt the plastic in the door and expose the lock that way. Fortunately, this can be prevented by fixing an anti-snap lock on your door. This type of lock will prevent lock picking as well as snapping and will make it impossible for anyone to tamper with your lock. Make sure the lock is fitted by a professional locksmith.

Sash jammer

Sash jammers are a cheap and simple form of extra security that can be easily fitted to a PVC door, and are in fact designed specifically for this type of door. They take the form of catches that can be set to make an extra lock if the main lock on the door has been broken or is open. The best types can be operated from both sides of the door and are lockable from the outside so that no one is accidentally locked out. Although they provide extra security, you should bear in mind that they wear out over time. You should replace them as soon as you notice any wear, as they can otherwise drop down and lock unexpectedly.

Door chain

Door chains are a third option for increasing security. Make sure you buy one that is specially designed for use with a PVC door. You will then be able to open the door partway to see who is out there, without anyone being able to force the door open. It is also possible to buy lockable door chains, which will provide an extra level of security and cannot be misused by children. You should, however, not fall into the trap of treating the chain as a lock and imagining that you are secure just from a chain — it is an extra line of defence, not a substitute for proper security.

You can never have too much security for your family. PVC doors are already a great choice, but simple upgrades will improve your safety even further. Just talk to your installer for more information. For more information on PVC doors, contact a professional near you.
